Art and Design at Eastrington Primary School

At Eastrington Primary School we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.

Intent

At Eastrington Primary School, we value Art and Design as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Our Art curriculum is designed to provide children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of drawing, creating sketchbooks, printmaking, sculpture, design, painting, craft, textiles, multimedia and digital art. We encourage children to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.

Implementation

The teaching and implementation of Art and Design at Eastrington Primary School is based on the National Curriculum and ensures a structured approach to this creative subject. Art is delivered by teaching specific skills and through opportunities for purposeful cross curricular links wherever possible. Children explore and practise practical skills and techniques, specific skills are revisited in each key stage, at a progressively deeper level.

As the children move through the school, they will work towards meeting the targets in the Art progression ladder inspired by the ‘Access Art’ curriculum. Teachers also refer to a detailed ‘progression of skills’ document which outlines the skills expected for each age range. Teachers use the Access Art scheme of work planning materials, but are welcome to choose other planning formats to ensure they are confident in the delivery of their lessons. Classrooms are well resourced, with children working in their dedicated sketchbooks or on a variety of media including digital media and canvas.

Each half term we celebrate creativity during our Art Extravaganza Assemblies where each class has an opportunity to share their learning experiences. The Golden Paintbrush Award is awarded to one child in each class every half term for excellent art work or fantastic effort.

Pupils regularly take part in exciting whole school Art themed days including whole school sketching and drawing focus weeks where children across school spend 10 minutes each day practising specific sketching exercises.

Impact

At Eastrington Primary School we understand the importance of fun, engaging and challenging lessons so that children are able to develop skill and confidence in this subject area. Our whole school art activities contribute to the excitement around this subject with all pupils having a shared purpose and goal.

Sketch books demonstrate that control and technique with media such as pencil, pastel and paint improve and develop throughout school and they are used to review and revisit ideas. Sketch books will contain experimentation, photographs and reflections, showing ideas and development rather than final pieces.

Teachers use formative and summative assessment information in Art and Design lessons to ensure pupils of all abilities, including the most able, are provided with the best possible support and challenge. Assessment information is collected through direct observation, discussion with pupils and pupil self-assessment opportunities. The Art Subject Coordinator and School Leaders monitor the impact of our curriculum provision in a variety of ways including, learning walks, book scrutinies and by listening to pupil voice.
