{"id":22873,"date":"2021-08-17T10:27:04","date_gmt":"2021-08-17T10:27:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/?p=22873"},"modified":"2026-01-14T21:50:20","modified_gmt":"2026-01-14T21:50:20","slug":"design-and-technology","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/?p=22873","title":{"rendered":"Design and Technology"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-45650 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Kapow.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"197\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong>Subject Coordinator- Mrs Donna Goodwin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Intent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Kapow Primary&#8217;s Design &amp; Technology curriculum is built around the core National Curriculum stages of\u00a0<strong class=\"Yjhzub\" data-processed=\"true\">Design, Make, and Evaluate<\/strong>, integrated within five key strands:\u00a0<mark class=\"HxTRcb\" data-processed=\"true\">Mechanisms, Structures, Textiles, Electrical Systems, and Cooking &amp; Nutrition<\/mark>, using a spiral approach where these areas are revisited with increasing complexity, ensuring pupils develop practical skills, technical knowledge, and reflective evaluation across projects.<span class=\"uJ19be notranslate\" data-wiz-uids=\"fLMDBc_d,fLMDBc_e\" data-processed=\"true\"><span class=\"vKEkVd\" data-animation-atomic=\"\" data-wiz-attrbind=\"class=fLMDBc_c\/TKHnVd\" data-processed=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>At Eastrington Primary School, our aims are to:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for Design and Technology.<br \/>\n\u2022 provide a broad and balanced curriculum.<br \/>\n\u2022 ensure that pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens through evaluation of past and present design and technology.<br \/>\n\u2022 develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.<br \/>\n\u2022 to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world using the language of design and technology.<\/p>\n<p>The aims of teaching design and technology in our school are:<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Develop creative, technical and imaginative thinking in children and to develop confidence to participate successfully in an increasingly technological world.<br \/>\n\u2022 Enable children to talk about how things work and to develop their technical knowledge.<br \/>\n\u2022 Apply a growing body of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make prototypes and products for a wide range of users.<br \/>\n\u2022 Encourage children to select appropriate tools and techniques when making a product, whilst following safe procedures.<br \/>\n\u2022 Develop an understanding of technological processes and products, their manufacture and their contribution to our society.<br \/>\n\u2022 Foster enjoyment, satisfaction and purpose in designing and making things.<br \/>\n\u2022 Critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products, and the work of others.<br \/>\n\u2022 Understand and apply the principles of nutrition and to learn how to cook.<br \/>\n\u2022 Understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Implementation<\/strong><br \/>\nTo ensure high standards of teaching and learning in design and technology, we implement a curriculum that is progressive throughout the whole school. Design and technology is taught through the units set out in through Kapow. This will involve the children exploring, researching, designing, making, technical knowledge\/skills and evaluating. The Kapow progression document ensures the curriculum is covered, and the skills\/knowledge taught are progressive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/design-and-tech-01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44544\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/design-and-tech-01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"295\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/design-and-tech-02.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-44545\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/design-and-tech-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"186\" height=\"274\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/design-and-tech-03.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-44546\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eastringtonprimaryschool.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/design-and-tech-03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"283\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>When designing and making, the children are taught to:<\/p>\n<p>Design:<br \/>\n\u2022 use research and develop design criteria to inform the design of innovative, functional, appealing products that are fit for purpose, aimed at particular individuals or groups.<br \/>\n\u2022 generate, develop, model and communicate their ideas through discussion, annotated sketches, cross-sectional diagrams, prototypes, pattern pieces and computer-aided design.<\/p>\n<p>Make<br \/>\n\u2022 select from and use a wider range of tools and equipment to perform practical tasks (for example, cutting, shaping, joining and finishing, as well as chopping and slicing) accurately.<br \/>\n\u2022 select from and use a wider range of materials, ingredients and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties, aesthetic qualities and, where appropriate, taste.<\/p>\n<p>Evaluate:<br \/>\n\u2022 investigate and analyse a range of existing products.<br \/>\n\u2022 evaluate their ideas and products against their own design criteria and consider the views of others to improve their work.<br \/>\n\u2022 understand how key events and individuals in design and technology have helped shape the world.<\/p>\n<p>Technical knowledge:<br \/>\n\u2022 apply their understanding of how to strengthen, stiffen and reinforce more complex structures.<br \/>\n\u2022 understand and use mechanical systems in their products.<br \/>\n\u2022 understand and use electrical systems in their products.<br \/>\n\u2022 apply their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control their products<br \/>\n\u2022 understand some of the ways that food can be processed and the effect of different cooking practices (including baking and grilling).<\/p>\n<p>In Early Years, the children develop essential basic skills in design and technology which prepares them for their transition into Year 1. This is by the teacher creating many opportunities for the children to carry out D&amp;T related activities across all areas of learning.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of Early Years, it is expected that the children will be able to:<br \/>\n\u2022 Construct with a purpose in mind.<br \/>\n\u2022 Use simple tools and techniques competently and appropriately.<br \/>\n\u2022 Build and construct with a wide range of objects, selecting appropriate resources and adapting their work when necessary.<br \/>\n\u2022 Select the tools and techniques they need to shape, assemble and join materials they are using.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Impact<\/strong><br \/>\nWe aim to provide enjoyable, practical and authentic design and technology s that prepare the children to take part in the development of tomorrow\u2019s rapidly changing world.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">We ensure the children:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Will be able to talk with increasing confidence about their learning in design and technology using appropriate vocabulary.<br \/>\n\u2022 Children enjoy Design and Technology lessons and are confident to \u2018have a go\u2019 applying their new skills.<br \/>\n\u2022 Develop a wider vocabulary, using technical and topical vocabulary.<br \/>\n\u2022 Children confidently apply their new found knowledge to other areas of learning.<br \/>\n\u2022 The
